Why MP4

YouTube stores videos in several formats, often separately: the picture in WebM or MP4 and the sound as a separate stream. Regular players and TVs can’t always open such files.

Whenever possible, the service picks the H.264 video and AAC audio variant and combines them into one MP4. It is the most compatible video format: it plays in the built-in players of Android, iOS, Windows and macOS, on TVs and set-top boxes, in editors like CapCut and DaVinci Resolve, and can be sent in messengers without re-encoding.

For vertical videos and Shorts the frame is rotated: for example, 1080p is 1080×1920. The file size in megabytes is shown on the button before the download starts.

Limits and how to get around them
